This is the blog for our Ethics and Regulatory Frameworks module presentation. We're looking into how internet TV might transform local TV and local radio news. On this blog are our research notes, meeting notes and other things that we'll use to put together a spiffing 15-minute presentation on February 7th.

MORE ABOUT KENT

The station was launched on September 21 2007 so is still a new idea.

The station aims to provide programmes under a series of channels which showcase the county's tourist attractions, through to how to find a residential home for an elderly relative parent.

The site states that: “At the heart of Kent TV lies its ambition to be a community channel, so individuals and local community groups can upload their own content onto Kent TV to highlight local issues.”

But the question of internet regulation remains a large concern.

I meant to mention earlier that I emailed Kent TV a few days a go to try and get some information on the site, costs, regulation, audience figures etc...as of yet no reply. (The same goes for Video Nation).

It's probably worth putting a call into Kent Council on Monday if we get nothing back.

What I am not sure about with Kent TV is whether it is going to attract anyone new to the region. I can understand that it is great for those who live/or have lived in Kent but I cannot see it bringing anyone to the region that hasn't been their. I am not convinced that this site is anything other than an expensive attempt at gaining tourists which is not going to work! In my view anyway.

I spoke to Tom Chown, the senior editor at Kent TV with regards to ethics and regulations as terms.

He said that Kent TV have opted into Ofcom regulations.

As an internet station, they were not obliged to follow Ofcom, but felt doing so would build an immediate trust with the audience who would not worry about the type of content thier children may be exposed to.

Regulation is definitely a sticking point of progress in internet TV. There are so many factors which could go wrong with a site if there is no one to check and proof all the user generated content.
